The Box of Fear Walkthrough

A complete route through The Box of Fear: the opening, the puzzles, Level B, the final split into two endings, and a cleanup path for 100% completion.

Spoiler warning: this walkthrough describes the route, the puzzles, and the ending conditions of The Box of Fear. If you want to discover the game cold on a first run, stop here — this page is for players who are stuck, replaying, or aiming for 100% completion.

The Box of Fear is a short first-person survival horror game (officially 60 to 90 minutes for a single run) built around exploration, puzzles, interconnected clues, locked doors, and creatures that hunt you. You play as Mark, searching for his missing daughter Sarah inside the facilities of the company THE BOX. The verified full-game structure runs: opening hall, an early safe puzzle, the facility floor, the toy puzzle, a deeper Level B, and a final split into two endings at the end of the route. This walkthrough lays out that path and points you to the dedicated pages for each puzzle, the collectibles, and the achievements.

Your goal on a typical first run is straightforward: follow the main route, solve each puzzle as the clue directs, and reach the ending of your chosen path. Everything else — dolls, hint-free play, sub-one-hour timing — is optional and described in its own guide.

Quick route overview

  1. Opening / prologue: Mark receives a package from THE BOX and enters the facility.
  2. Early facility: explore the opening halls, gather tools, and open the safe to progress.
  3. Facility floor: follow clues and locked doors across the main rooms, collecting dolls as you go.
  4. Toy puzzle: solve the three-toy puzzle to unlock the way forward (and optionally the Puzzle Master two-move method).
  5. Level B: descend into the deeper level for the back half of the route.
  6. Ending split: make the final choice — ENDING 1 (escape) or ENDING 2 (locked box) — covered in the Endings guide.

Part 1 — Opening / Prologue

The game opens with Mark receiving a package from the company THE BOX, which is what triggers his search. Your first task is to move into the facility and begin reading the environment. This short opening section exists to place you in Mark's situation before the puzzles take over, and the arrival achievement (In Box — receive a package from The Box) unlocks on the way in.

There is little combat here; the opening is about orientation and story setup. Use it to practice inspecting surfaces and reading documents, because the whole game rewards that habit. Early in the facility you will meet Sarah for the first time as a story beat (the First Meeting achievement), which sets the personal stakes before the survival pressure begins.

Part 2 — The safe puzzle

Fairly early in the facility floor you will hit a locked safe that blocks progress. This is the game's first real checkpoint. Two things matter here: gather the required tools (notably the lighter and related key item) from the early rooms before attempting it, and read the clue for the code. If the safe does not respond, you have not found everything you need yet. See the safe puzzle guide for the full method.

Part 3 — Facility progression

After the safe, the route moves through the main facility floor. This section is where most of the route's doors, documents, and doll pickups happen. Continue forward, solving the interlinked clues the game hands you, and stay alert: this is also where the creatures that hunt you become a real presence. The route is linear enough that moving forward through the rooms is the correct instinct, but sweeping each room for notes and dolls before leaving protects you from missing completion items.

Keep an eye on the dolls as you pass — they are the collectibles tied to The Collector achievement, and the short game makes picking them up as you go the cheapest way to finish the set.

Part 4 — The toy puzzle

Near the end of the facility floor, the toy puzzle blocks the descent. You need to interact with three toys in the order the in-room clue describes. Doing the normal three-step solve opens the way; working out the compact two-move method additionally unlocks the Puzzle Master achievement. This is one of the clearer mechanics in the game, and the dedicated page covers both the normal and the achievement path.

Part 5 — Level B

Solving the toy puzzle grants access to Level B (the Level B achievement — welcome to level B). The second half of the route takes place here. It is darker and denser with the survival threat, and it is also where the story reaches its fuller explanation. Expect more locked progression tied to clues and the pacing of two endings. There is also a playable character shift connected to Major West in the later stretch (the New Perspective achievement), which the story frames through the events in this part of the route.

Part 6 — The ending split

At the end of the route, the game presents the choice that determines your ending — ENDING 1 (the escape path, earning Escape Box) or ENDING 2 (the locked-box path, earning Locked Box). Because there are two endings, seeing both is the condition for the Two Sides of the Box achievement. The dedicated Endings guide explains each path and how to replay for the other one.

Completion cleanup

Once you have finished one ending, your completion checklist is short:

  • Both endings: replay the final stretch and take the other choice for Two Sides of the Box.
  • All dolls: sweep any rooms you missed on a cleanup run for The Collector.
  • Puzzle Master: solve the toy puzzle in two moves on a replay if you did not on the first run.
  • No Time to Waste + Challenge Accepted: a sub-1-hour run without hints covers both; see the stride notes below.

Hint-free route notes

Two achievements push you toward a careful run: Challenge Accepted (finish without using hints) and No Time to Waste (finish in an hour or less). The good news is that the main route is short, so a streamlined run of the six parts above easily fits the hour window if you do not backtrack or linger. Because the demo and early notes tell you the safe needs its tools, gathering everything in order prevents the wasted time of returning for a missing item. If you combine a no-hint run with the hour target, do your collectible hunting on a separate run so the time pressure and doll sweep do not fight each other.

Demo vs full game

The free Steam demo and the full release differ in the early stretch. The developer's final demo update explicitly redesigned the early progression, clarified the puzzle introduction, and adjusted the level flow, moving or shortening some sections. So treat this walkthrough as the full-release route: puzzle layouts and order you remember from an older demo — especially the safe — should be re-checked in the final version. The complete free Steam demo remains available if you want to sample the tone first.
