The Box of Fear Safe Puzzle

The safe puzzle is one of the first puzzles most players meet in the full game, located in the early part of the facility floor. Its purpose is to reward careful reading: the code is not shown on the safe itself, and a couple of tools you need to solve it are found elsewhere before you can actually open it. The puzzle is forgiving to experiment with, but the developer has confirmed that the intended flow expects you to gather the right items first rather than brute-forcing the safe.

Where you find the safe

You encounter the safe in the early facility section, tied to progress rather than the very first room. Enemies can wander near it or be triggered while you are looking at it, so staying calm and solving quickly matters more than running. The safe typically functions as the blockage between the opening hall and the next puzzle area.

Tools you need first

The full release ties the safe to tool-gated progress. In particular, the safe puzzle is designed so you should have the necessary means before you attempt it; the developer's patch notes explicitly mention preventing the safe from being solved before the player has the required tools, because solving it early without them could cause problems for the rest of the game. In practice this means: gather the lighter (and the related key item) from around the early rooms before focusing on the safe. If the safe does not respond to interaction, you have not found everything you need yet.

The clue behind the code

Like the rest of The Box of Fear, the safe's code is delivered through the environment rather than a label. Look for a document, a picture, or a marked object near the safe or in the room you reached just before it. Players who explored thoroughly have remarked that the code is straightforward once you notice the clue — one community player even opened the safe without reading any of the instructions, which is a sign the intended code is both findable and memorable. If brute-forcing does not appeal, collect and read every note you have before entering codes.

How to open it

Walk up to the safe, interact to reveal the code input, enter the digits shown by the clue you found, and confirm. If the tumblers or lock reset, re-check the note you believe shows the code — It is easy to transpose the order of a multi-digit sequence under pressure. Once open, the safe usually yields either the tool or the story item that unlocks the next stage of the route.

The exact code for the full release was not published from a reliable second source at the time of writing, so this page deliberately does not print a number that could send players in the wrong direction. Follow the in-game clue.

Note: the safe differs from older demos

The developer's final demo update redesigned the early progression, made the puzzle introduction clearer, and moved or shortened some sections. So the safe's exact position and its code in the final Steam release should be treated as the current version, and any memory of the safe from an older demo should not be relied on for the full game.
