The Box of Fear Under 1 Hour
A streamlined route to finish The Box of Fear in 60 minutes or less, unlocking the No Time to Waste achievement — and the Challenge Accepted no-hint run in the same run if you play without hints.
The Box of Fear is officially listed at 60 to 90 minutes for a single run, so finishing in under an hour is a challenge which is very achievable. The No Time to Waste achievement asks you to finish the game in 1 hour or less, which roughly 18% of Steam players have earned. Because the route is short and linear-ish, a tight run comes down to moving with purpose, doing puzzles first try, and skipping optional exploration.
No Time to Waste — the goal
No Time to Waste unlocks when you finish the game in one hour or less. It is a Rare achievement in the game's data. There is no in-game timer you need to watch; your Steam playtime, or simply finishing comfortably inside an hour, is what matters. The recommended approach is a focused run of the main route with no cleanup:
- Follow the straight route: opening, safe puzzle, facility floor, toy puzzle, Level B, ending.
- Skip the doll hunt entirely — that is for a separate Collector run, not this one.
- Solve the safe and toy puzzles on the first read of their clues instead of experimenting.
- Pick one ending firmly and commit; do not linger at the split.
Puzzle quick solutions
Two puzzles gate your progress, so doing them first-time is the biggest time save. Re-read their clues immediately rather than exploring before solving:
- Safe puzzle — gather the lighter and key tools from the early rooms first, then enter the code shown by the nearby clue. Have everything before you reach the safe so you are not backtracking.
- Toy puzzle — follow the in-room clue order for the three toys. The two-move Puzzle Master method is optional here; on a speedrun just do the normal solve quickly.
What to skip
A sub-1-hour run is defined by what you leave behind:
- No collectible searching — skip the dolls for this run.
- Minimal backtracking — read clues fully so you do not return for a missed tool.
- Do not attempt the Puzzle Master two-move trick here unless you know it cold.
Combine with Challenge Accepted (no-hint run)
Challenge Accepted — finish without using hints — is the rarest achievement in the game (roughly 7% of players). Since the hint system is optional and you can turn it off, a sub-1-hour run and a no-hint run use the same streamlined route. The cleanest method is to play with hints disabled from the start: if you do not use the hint system at all, finish under an hour, and follow the main route, you can unlock No Time to Waste and Challenge Accepted in the same run. The one thing to avoid is reaching for hints when you are stuck — trust the clues you already have.
Rough time checkpoints
These are loose landmarks, not hard rules, to tell you if you are on pace for under an hour:
- Opening + safe solved: about 10–15 minutes in.
- Facility floor explored, toy puzzle solved: around the 30–40 minute mark.
- Level B completed and ending chosen: finish inside the hour.
